Vienna is famous for its christmas markets and attracts a lot of both domestic and international visitors during this time of the year. These markets reflect the advent period and on Sundays often a new candle is publicly lit as part of the program. You can find several christmas markets in the city, especially downtown, and the most famous one is held at the park of the City Hall. 1. Rathausplatz Weihnachtsmarkt / Christkindlemarkt

This is the most famous christmas market in Vienna. It is organized in front of the City Hall (Rathaus). There are many food stalls where you can eat traditional Austrian bakery products and drink hot mulled wine (Glühwein), alcohol-free punch and spicy teas. You can also buy handcrafted souvenirs and decorations at the sellers. There is a park in front of the City Hall and it has a special Christmas flair during that time of the year with lots of decorations on the trees and extra programs for children.

This is a christmas market in an imperial setting. It's held in the Parade Court in front of Schloss Schönbrunn. Eighty stalls featuring a variety of exhibitors from Austria and neighboring countries will offer traditional and high-quality arts and crafts, unique Christmas decorations, nostalgic toys, and more. Roasted chestnuts, almonds, punch and cakes will be available, as well.

This market is held on Maria Theresien Platz. On the one side of the square you will find the Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum) and on the other side the Nature History Museum (Naturhistorisches Museum). The MuseumsQuartier with a bunch of museums and more winter programs are also a couple of minutes away.

4. Stephansplatz christmas market / Weihnachtsmarkt am Stephansplatz

This christmas market is held in the touristic center of Vienna. There are about 40 stalls offering regional food, arts and crafts and the usual winter snacks. There is always a big christmas tree on the square and special lighting. When it gets dark on side of the St. Stephan's Cathedral gets a red lighting behind the market stalls.

8. Winter in MuseumsQuartier (MQ)

The MuseumsQuartier expects visitors with a rich program and a different kind of christmas market. From 1 December and 3 December there is a christmas fair for designers where 100 independent labels and artist present their art pieces for sale. There is also a special light projection on the building of Leopold Museum. This event has more of a hipster flair. The MQ is just a few minutes walk away from the christmas market at Maria Theresien Square.
